Winnie Mtwakwande – Advice Bureau in Qadi

Winnie has worked with HABandBF since it began in the 1970’s, starting as an Interpreter.  The organization supported her through her Paralegal training at the then University of Natal.  Since completing her Paralegal Diploma Winnie has run the Advice Bureau, representing clients in their claims with Companies and Organisations such as due benefits and grants, pension funds, road traffic accident claims, helping people obtain what is due to them.
Winnie is the third daughter of eleven children and raised her son and daughter as a single parent.  She enjoys going to church, music and growing her own fruit and veg.  She is looking forward to retirement in 2025.
 
             

 

Rosemary Dickinson: Schools Fund

Rosie has administered the Schools Programme for the HABandBF since 2003.   Having been involved in Service Clubs for many years and in the Social Responsibilities portfolio in her church she is passionate about trying to improve the lot of those who have little and believes that education is a right for every child. 
 
 
As well as sourcing uniforms she has served as Treasurer, a portfolio she is keen to hand over to a successor.  
 
Rosie has three children and 6 grandchildren – all true loyal South Africans.
 

Heather Maybery: Secretary and Tertiary Fund

Heather  taught Commercial Subjects 40 odd years ago but gave up working when she had her first baby.  She returned to work once her two daughters were grown up, becoming Training Manager for a Publishing Company.   She loved being involved in the young people’s lives and seeing them gain confidence through knowledge – and make a success of their careers and their lives.   She is now retired.
 
She is married to Dave and has two daughters (both married) and three grandchildren.  Following some health issues she is looking forward to handing her HABandBF responsibilities over to a successor.

 

Nokuthula Sokhela:  Advice Bureau in Qadi

Nokuthula joined HABandBF as an intern in the Advice Bureau in 2015.  She successfully completed her paralegal qualification and took on full responsibility in 2019 since when she has grown the Bureau’s services and improved the speed of case completion by accompanying clients to the various offices and advocating for them.
 
Nokuthula was the child head of her family from the age of 18.  She has two children and is caregiver for her young nephew.  Nokuthula is a member of the Empilweni Primary School Governing Body and a Community Police Officer.

 

 

Wiseman Mabaso:  CAO Project and Tertiary Fund

Having experienced the benefit of HABandBF's work within KwaBazothini High School during his tenure as Principal, since his retirement in 2017 Wiseman has worked within the Tertiary Fund, CAO Project and Advice Bureau.  Wiseman continues to live up to his name in providing invaluable advice and counsel within the Tertiary Fund and the CAO Project.
 
Wiseman is married and has 6 children and 8 grandchildren.  He continues to lead the New Philippians Acts of the Apostolic church in Botha's Hill where he has been Pastor for 20 years.

Marijke Merson: Tertiary Fund

Marijke trained in the Netherlands for the Pre Primary sector, and studied further after immigrating to SA, obtaining her HDE.  She joined HABandBF  in January 2018 when she retiring after 43 years in education, 24 of them as Principal/Teacher at a Pre-Primary school.  She brought expertise in leadership, counselling and negotiations as well as developing courses for educators.  With her husband Keith she has facilitated overseas Teacher training students for over 10 years. 
 
Marijke is passionate about Education and Life Skills and believes a good solid foundation is the key to success. She assists with advising Tertiary Fund students at the fortnightly Drop-Ins. 
 

Nicky Ntswaki Sibaya: Tertiary Fund and Marketing

Nicky boasts a rich background in event management and catering, with over a decade of experience in organizing major concerts. Her passion for charity work was ignited during her high school years when she witnessed underprivileged students struggling to access funding and guidance for tertiary education.
 
As a dedicated mother of four and a strong advocate for youth empowerment, her primary goal is to ensure that every child has the opportunity to realize their dreams.  She is a second mother to the 50-odd Tertiary students we assist.

Ann Braine: CAO Project

Ann joined HABandBF in 2021 to work with the CAO project and soon found herself involved in other aspects of the organization as well.   In 1998 she helped found the Central Applications Office, which receives and processes applications for public universities in KwaZulu-Natal.  After retiring in 2012 she served as consultant to the DHET team setting up the national Central Application Service.  Before starting the CAO Ann was Director of Financial Aid at the University of Natal, so she is familiar with many of the challenges facing students as they start out.  
 
Ann is married to Bill, and has two children and three step-children.  They share six geographically scattered grandchildren.

Caitlyn de Beer: Schools Fund

As well as being a wife and mum of two, Caitlyn is an author, motivational speaker and was previously a psychology lecturer.
 
She is passionate about bridging the gap between the varying socioeconomic classes in the greater Upper Highway area and does this through creating connections, partnerships with many local NPOs and overseeing the HABandBF Schools Fund and Pass the Panties Initiative.  She is also the driving force behind a move towards closer collaboration between the various NPO’s engaging with schools in the Valley of 1000 Hills.

Siyabonga Sishi: Volunteer  

Siyabonga is a dedicated community developer from Kwanyuswa.  He attended Siyajabula High School and holds certifications from Word Changers Academy.  His career began at The Valley Trust with a project sponsored by the University of KwaZulu-Natal, where he spent 7 years interviewing community members to collect data, and he still serves as an ambassador for the Asenze Study.
 
He started volunteering with HABandBF in 2024 and has already assisted in many areas, particularly the Qadi Advice Bureau and carrying out follow-up for the CAO Project on high fliers who are approaching graduation.

Laura Chesterton: Bookkeeper

Laura Chesterton is a full time accountant working towards her CIMA. 
 
She is recently married and passionate about baking and her 3 cats.  Laura joined HABandBF in 2024.
