ABOUT US
The town of Hillcrest sits on the western edge of the eThekwini Municipality (Durban), with upmarket suburbs to its East and the Valley of 1000 Hills on its Western fringe.
The Valley of 1000 Hills is an area of great natural beauty, but economic hardship and poverty, beset in recent years by civil unrest, natural disasters as well as poor service delivery.
The riots of July 2021 and the floods in April 2022 hit the area very hard.
The area faces many challenges, with a high proportion of households with no wage-earners, dependent on meagre social grants.
In many cases these households are headed by pensioners or even children.
For many youngsters, education is the only way they will pull themselves out of poverty.
It is in this context that the Hillcrest Advice Bureau and Bursary Fund team which is comprised mostly of volunteers continues the work started in 1972 by women who dedicated themselves to the fight for a better life for the impoverished and underprivileged.
Although much has improved nationally, and fees are no longer the insurmountable obstacle to education that they once were, young people from disadvantaged communities still face many challenges, and we do what we can to ease their passage and assist them to achieve their full potential.
